SYMPHONY OF DIVERSITY: Power of Music in Embracing Migrants

The POMEM project unites participants, partner organizations and participating communities for sustainable growth and ensuring equity, prosperity and social inclusion in Europe and beyond through musical performances. To specify the needs of the target youth group, we conducted a need analysis using a survey.

This survey was answered by 200 youngsters and youth workers in total between the ages of 18 to 45 and the needs specified are as follows:

• The need for information about hate speech, its roots, and the difference between freedom of speech and hate speech.

• The need for shared understanding, values, practices and intercultural dialogue.

• The need for change of perspectives and attitudes towards migrants.

Results:

12 music experts, 12 trainers, 10 local stakeholders, and 90 young people with migrant and refugee backgrounds were involved in project activities to conduct project achievements. The concrete result of the project is 4 video clip albums performed by choirs to promote tolerance and inclusive societies.

Objectives:

• To improve the knowledge, skills and competencies of young migrants in music and provide guidance in the learning of the most important practical basics of different musical values for creating solidarity in local communities,

• To perform concerts with young migrants to engage, empower and connect with society

• To develop an understanding of hate speech and xenophobia, particularly in the context of cultural diversity, discrimination, intolerance, freedom of expression and human rights

• To form choirs consisting of young migrants in each participating country to spread tolerance in the EU
